Case Study - Southwest/Western Colorado Health Care Initiative

The Southwest Colorado Workforce Center has launched a sector partnership to address healthcare industry challenges in recruitment and retention. Geography is a challenge in recruitment, and higher skilled positions are difficult to fill. The industry reports high turnover due to burnout and strong competition from other industries.

There are four goals under this initiative:
1) Improve retention of CNAs and other entry-level occupations through mentoring and life skills/work readiness training;
2) Strengthen the health care career ladder by adding certified medical assistant training;
3) Upgrade RN skills in specialty areas using a structured mentoring program; and
4) Bring needed health care training opportunities into local areas.

To address goal 1, the Southwest/Western Healthcare Initiative in Colorado created a 4-module training program on essential skills for healthcare. The complete curriculum is provided below, including annotated facilitation guides, powerpoint presentations, and handouts.
